MA Graduation

The Cambridge MA is conferred (awarded) by right on holders of the University BA degree, and on certain other senior members. It is not available as a postgraduate qualification.

Holders of the BA degree become eligible for an MA degree not less than six years after the end of the first term of residence.

The College writes to our eligible graduates with details of the MA Congregation at which we plan to present candidates. As with BA General Admission/Congregation, the MA can be presented at another Congregation.

In 2024, those who matriculated in 2017 and hold a BA degree will be able to take their MAs.

Possession of the MA (or any other Cambridge Masters degree or doctorate) confers membership of the University Senate. This gives the right to:

• participate in Discussions (part of the University's decision-making process)
• vote in the election of a new Chancellor or High Steward
• borrow books from the University Library

Arrangements for MA Congregation

• After invitation by the College, those being presented should book for the ceremony online.
• All invited are warmly welcome to dinner in Hall on the evening before the ceremony (we are unable to offer overnight accommodation).
• The Dean organises a short rehearsal in the Old Library (all should be dressed in graduation attire), before proceeding to the Senate House.
• After the ceremony, graduates & their guests are invited for afternoon tea at the College.

2 guests per graduand are currently permitted at the Senate House. Congregations are also live–streamed so that family members and friends who are not able to attend can watch the ceremony on their own devices.
