The Learning Together programme, run by Dr Amy Ludlow and Dr Ruth Armstrong at the Department of Criminology, has brought together prison inmates and Cambridge students every year since 2015, all united by a desire to learn, and to share academic and personal experience.

Last summer the two of us were lucky enough to spend a month volunteering in remote community schools in rural Nepal, thanks to the amazing work of a local grassroots NGO called ‘HELP’ (Helambu Education and Livelihood Project).
Elsa – International Bridges to Justice
International Bridges to Justice is a legal rights NGO in Geneva, where I worked for a nine-week placement. IBJ works to reduce pre-trial detention, eradicate investigative torture and ensure that every detainee in the developing world has early access to legal counsel.
Daisy – Two months in Malawi
Whilst I was in Malawi carrying out research for my Geography dissertation, I also worked with the ‘Book Bus’, a British charity that operates in both Africa and South America to improve children’s literacy in a fun and interesting way.

Sam, Tess and Alex, three friends in their first year, reading Economics (Sam and Tess) and Classics (Alex), taught English in Debre Zeit, Ethiopia, with support from a local charity called Link Ethiopia.

Helen – Poets and Parents
Through the generosity of the Late 80s fund and a member, I was awarded a full studentship, enabling me to study for an MPhil in Modern and Contemporary Literature. My MPhil dissertation investigates the relationship between poetry and parenthood.
