Hardship and Bursaries

Hardship

Hardship cases at Emma were once relatively exceptional. Now, sadly, that’s no longer the case. Every year, students come to us needing help for everything from unexpected changes to their family circumstances, to managing the impact of a serious illness or unexpected injury. In recent years, we’ve seen an increased - and growing - need for mental health support, with more of our students than ever asking for help with the costs of private counselling or therapy. Meeting this need by strengthening our provision for mental health and wellbeing care is now a priority.

A grant given for any of the reasons above can be a lifeline for students facing difficulties during their studies. We’re grateful that donations help us step in and be there for students when they need it most.

Cambridge Bursary Scheme

For many young people, the prospect of affording a university education – with the burden of student debt and high living costs – can be daunting. The Cambridge Bursary Scheme enables undergraduates from all backgrounds to come to Emma and make the most of their time here, without financial worries. Bursaries are means-tested*, so those from the lowest-income backgrounds receive the most support. And enhanced bursaries are available for students with additional financial challenges, such as those who were previously eligible for free school meals, independent students, care leavers and clinical medics.

Around 1 in 5 undergraduates currently receive a bursary at Emma. A full (standard) Cambridge Bursary is £3500 per year.

*To be eligible, students must have a household income under £62,215 a year.
