Accommodation

We provide all our undergraduate students with accommodation throughout their time at Cambridge. Our postgraduates can also apply for our rooms & apartments in College or around Cambridge.

We have over 400 undergraduate rooms on the College site, located in our historic buildings, which are in a range of architectural styles. Our 120 postgraduate rooms, houses & apartments are either on–site or located around central Cambridge, near to the University Faculties.

College rooms are provided as part of a package which includes access to Hall and the Cafeteria, as well as all central College facilities. Students pay room rent for 30 weeks of Full Term each year, and rent grades apply to both undergraduate & postgraduate accommodation. Postgraduate charges depend on the distance from the College site.

Together with all other colleges in Cambridge, Emmanuel College observes the ANUK code of practice in the provision of student accommodation and services.

Undergraduates

Our first year students ('freshers') live in North Court & South Court, allocated via a random allocation system, according to the rent grade specified on admission. These typically are single rooms, sharing a bathroom & small kitchen (or 'gyp' room) with up to six other people (although some en-suite rooms are available in the newest part of South Court). Our courts are arranged in a traditional collegiate way, around the beautiful, calm gardens. On some staircases Fellows have their studies, which are used for their college teaching ('supervisions').

Second & third years live across our other accommodation buildings. These range from 'sets' of rooms in Old Court, to our contemporary en–suite rooms in the new south–side court. Rooms have shared bathrooms & kitchens ('gyp' rooms), or are en–suite. Allocation of rooms for second & third year students is organised at the end of Lent Term via a ballot system. Students who are first in the ballot are able to choose from all of our rooms. This then continues in order of the names drawn. We reverse the ballot in the next academic year.

Postgraduates

We have over 100 rooms for postgraduates, and 7 flats for couples. All our new postgrads are usually offered accommodation for their first year. Clinical & Veterinary Medicine students and those from overseas can normally be housed for the duration of their course. If there are rooms available, we can sometimes accommodate UK & Irish PhD students for more than one year.

Our postgraduate accommodation is located both on the College site, and around central Cambridge. Students can live at Barnwell Hostel (about 5 minutes cycle from the College site), or in the terraces & streets local to the College (Market Ward). Our Medical & PGCE students live in our houses on Hills Road (near Addenbrooke's Hospital). These are closest to the relevant Faculties. Postgraduates also live in Park Lodge & Park Terrace on the edge of the main College site. Although we welcome applications from students with children, we regret that, at present, we cannot offer suitable accommodation.

Students who do not live in College accommodation generally rent privately. Please contact the University Accommodation Service for more information.
