Military Service: Lieutenant Royal Marine Light Infantry, attached 190th Brigade Machine Gun Corps. Wounded 13 November 1916 during the attack on Hamel, in the Battle of the Somme. Died 1 December 1916.


Applegarth, Thomas William

Military Service: 2nd Lieutenant 11th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Died in enemy hands 9 August 1918 after being wounded 3 June 1918 near Rosières, during the German advance through the Somme area.

Military Service: 2nd Lieutenant 'E' Battalion, Tank Corps. Killed in action 20 November 1917 during the Battle of Cambrai.

Military Service: Lieutenant 9th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Killed by sniper 20 February 1916 near Armentières while leading a party up a bombing sap. His Brigadier wrote “He was a gallant lad and a fine soldier and did his work admirably.”.

Military Service: Captain Royal Gloucestershire Hussars. Killed during a charge on the Senussi rebels 26 February 1916 at Agagieh in Egypt whilst attached to the Dorset Yeomanry. Mentioned in Despatches.

Military Service: Squadron Commander. Royal Naval Air Service. Died in a flying accident 12 September 1917 at the Royal Naval Air Service Flying School at Eastchurch.

Coltman, Richard Lester

Military Service: Lieutenant Coldstream Guards, attached to 2nd Guards Machine Gun Company. Died on 27 November 1917 in fighting at Fontaine during the Battle of Cambrai.

Military Service: Lieutenant 3rd Field Company London Royal Engineers. Died 22 February from wounds received on 21 February 1915. Shot after destroying, under heavy, close range, rifle fire, a parapet erected by the Germans. Described by his sergeant as “the finest gentleman it has ever been my lot to work under.”.

College Notes: Came up to Peterhouse in 1907 to read History, gaining Firsts in both Tripos. After a period teaching at Gresham School he was elected a Fellow of Emmanuel in 1912 as a lecturer in History.
Military Service: Captain 1/5th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Wounded during fighting at Suvla Bay on 16 August 1915. After time in hospital, he was posted to France, attached to the 1/8th Battalion, Royal Warwick Regiment. He was killed in action 27 August 1916 in fighting on the Ovilliers Spur during the Battle of the Somme; leading an attack he was wounded in the arm but pressed on to be killed later.

Military Service: Captain Royal Army Medical Corps attached 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards. Died 31st July 1917 in the fighting around Pilkem, on the opening day of the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). His Commanding Officer wrote “He had been working hard attending to the wounded under rifle and shell fire, and I asked him to go and reconnoitre another and better aid-post. It was while doing this that he was killed.”

Military Service: 2nd Lieutenant 'D' (Howitzer) Battery, 17 Brigade Royal Field Artillery. Died 11th May 1917 of wounds received in April probably in the fighting along the river Scarpe.

Military Service: 2nd Lieutenant 4th, attached 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Died 26 April 1915 in fighting on Hill 60, a strategically important feature to the south of Ypres. During this fighting Pte Edward Warner (also of the 1st Bedfords) won the VC.

Military Service: 2nd Lieutenant 5th Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment. Died 26 September 1916, probably in the area of Delville Wood. Was in action at Gallipoli and evacuated to Egypt before going to Flanders,where he would appear to have joined the 6th Battalion as the 5th remained in Egypt.

Military Service: Lieutenant Royal Engineers, attached 1st Nigerian Regiment. West Africa Frontier Force. Died of syncope after illness 5 February 17 in Morogoro, German East Africa (now Tanzania). Joined the Yola Column for the fighting in Kameroon from being a mining engineer in Nigeria.

Military Service: 2nd Lieutenant 1st Battalion, Royal. Munster Fusiliers. Died 7 June 1917 during the capture of Wytschaete, Battle of Messines. Quote from letter from Commanding Officer. “Your gallant boy was actually in command of his company on the day of the attack; he was a fine soldier, and is a great loss to the battalion.” His senior officer officer writes: “The company your son commanded on the day of the attack was given the village of --- as its objective; he was one of the foremost to enter the village, and just as the objective was taken he was hit by a shell splinter, death being instantaneous. He died a soldier's death when victory was certain and his task had been achieved.”

Military Service: Lieutenant 2nd Battalion, Manchester Regiment. Died of wounds 15 July 1916, probably received during fighting in the Montauban area.


Jones, Benedict Henry Melvill

College Notes: Accepted 1916 but did not come into residence.
Military Service: Lieutenant RAF. Killed in a flying accident 14 April 1918 during flight trials at the RAF Experimental Establishment, Orfordness. The trials were being directed by his elder brother, Captain Bennett Melvill Jones (a graduate, and later Fellow, of Emmanuel).


Junor, Patrick Bruce

Military Service: Private East African Maxims. Killed 23 June 1915 at Bukoba, (a port on Lake Victoria in German East Africa) in a raid during the early part of the East African campaign to destroy the German radio station there. His death was not reported to the College until 1916 and was believed to have been in August/September 1914.

Military Service: Lieutenant North Irish Horse. Died of wounds 6 October 1918 received in the 5th Battle of Ypres, whilst attached to 13th Battery, 17th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.

Military Service: Lieutenant RNVR, Howe Battalion, Royal Naval Div. Was present at the evacuation of Antwerp, before being sent to Egypt where he helped to repel the first Suez Canal raid. He took part in the landings at Cape Hellas, being wounded and given staff appointments in Alexandria. He was killed 13 November 1916 when leading his company in the attack on Beaucourt during the Battle of the Somme.
