He is a Trustee of British and Irish Lions Ltd. and of Barbarians Football Trust. He is a former Chairman Wales Youth Agency, a former member of the Prince of Wales Committee, Arts and Business (Wales), of the British Council Wales, and a formerTrustee of Llandovery College.

He was a Times Columnist 1980-2013 and is the author of several books on rugby, the latest of which is “The Greatest Welsh Tries Ever” (2013).

He was awarded a CBE for services to rugby and working with young people. He is on the Roll of Honour in the Welsh Sports Hall of fame. His distinction has also been recognised by the award of honorary doctorates at Loughborough University, Swansea University and Glamorgan University (now part of the University of South Wales) as well as by Honorary Fellowships at: Emmanuel College, Glyndwr University, Aberystwyth University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Trinity St Davids (merger of Trinity College Carmarthen and Lampeter) and Cardiff University.

He has served in many roles in the world of Rugby including: Board Director of the Welsh Rugby Union; Member of the International Rugby Board; British and Irish Lions Manager to South Africa 2009; British and Irish Lions Chairman 2009-2014. In wider public life he has been: Chairman Cardiff Business Club 2006-2014; Member of the Eisteddfod Gorsedd of Bards; Vice President Morriston Orpheus Choir; Non-Executive Odgers Berndtson (Wales) and a Consultant at JM Finn & Co Ltd.
