Dr Letizia Mortara

Letizia is Associate Professor at the Institute of Manufacturing at the University, and one of our Directors of Studies in Engineering. She is one of our Bye–Fellows, and a Fellow of Newnham College.

Biography

Letizia studied as an undergraduate in Bologna for her Diploma di Maturità Scientifica and in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Bologna, Italy. After spending three years working as a Process and Product Manager in the chemical industry, she moved to the UK where she gained her PhD in processing and process scale–up of advanced ceramic materials at Cranfield University. She has worked within the Centre for Technology Management at the University's Institute for Manufacturing since 2005. She is also an Associate Editor for the RD Management journal and Director of Studies at Newnham College.

Teaching

Letizia teaches papers in Manufacturing Fundamentals , as part of the third–year Manufacturing specialty on the undergraduate Engineering course. 

Research

At the Institute for Manufacturing in the Department of Engineering, Letizia convenes the Decision–Making for Emerging Technology group. Her research focuses on Technological Decision Making with the aim to improve organisational response to fast–changing technological and innovation contexts. Her work aims to work at integrating digital technologies such as AI, VR and AR with management tools and approaches to support the taking of such decisions.

Her research covers Technology intelligence (i.e. the company activity set–up in order to keep abreast with the latest developments in technology), and the adoption of Open Innovation practices in industry. She is interested in digitalisation phenomena linked to the advent of Digital Fabrication technologies in manufacturing (e.g. 3D Printing) and their implications for business.
