Charles Powell

MA, MMath, PhD (Cantab.)

One of our Bye–Fellows, Charles is our Director of Studies for first year Mathematics.

Biography

Charles was born in Devon, and studied for both his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at Emmanuel. He is now a postdoctoral research associate at the Institute of Computing for Climate Science (ICCS) and DAMTP

Research

His research uses fluid dynamics and numerical simulations to understand atmospheric processes. His PhD focussed on convective transport of water vapour from the troposphere (the bottom layer of the atmosphere, where our weather occurs) into the overlying stratosphere (where dynamics are more strongly influenced by radiation and chemistry). Continuing the theme of coupling between atmospheric layers, his current work considers the downward effect of oscillating stratospheric winds on deep convection in the tropics.
