Herchel Smith Scholarships
The generosity of the late Dr Herchel Smith has made it possible to offer a number of scholarships to Harvard University each year.
About the Scholarships
This year's Scholarships are tenable for one or two years, from September in the year following the award of the scholarship. They include return fares to the United States, living allowances, travel in America, tuition expenses and health insurance.
Candidacy is open to all members of Emmanuel College, whether currently resident or not, whose first degree (at Cambridge or elsewhere) was completed not more than five years and six months before the date on which the scholarship is to be taken up, or will be completed by then.
Although the Scholarships provide financial support, they do not carry any guarantee of a place on any course at Harvard. The award of a Scholarship is made subject to acceptance by Harvard for the course proposed. You are expected to explore the courses available to you and to give details in your application of those that you wish to take. One-year Herchel Smith Scholars commonly apply for Special Student status in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, but the scholarships are also appropriate for one-year and two-year courses leading to Master's degrees, such as those provided by the Law School or the Business School. The scholarships are not available for those intending to study for the Ph.D. degree or to undertake post-doctoral research.
You may obtain an application form for the Scholarship from the Master's Secretary, or you can download it by following the link below. Your completed application should reach The Master's PA, Jane Macmillan, firstname.lastname@example.org by the closing date. You are required to name two or three referees, and to ask each of them to write a letter of support direct to the Master's Secretary, to reach her by the same closing date. See the dates page for information about the interview date for shortlisted candidates.
