Peter Beckwith was born in 1945 and educated at Merchant Taylors’ School, Northwood and Harrow School before coming to Emmanuel to read Law in 1966. He was admitted solicitor in 1970, and from 1972 to 1992 was subsequently co-founder, Managing Director, Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the London & Edinburgh Trust.

Since 1992, he has been Chairman of PMB Holdings Limited, and became Chairman of PMB (Europe) Limited in 1998. He became a Trustee and Vice-Patron of the Cambridge Foundation in 1992 and a Companion of the Cambridge University Guild of Benefactors in 1998. In 2000, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of Law by Cambridge University. He was elected to a honorary fellowship of Emmanuel in 1999.

His interests include tennis – he was Chairman and co-founder of the Riverside Racquet Club, Chiswick, 1987-1995 and is a debenture holder of the All England Tennis Club – skiing, cycling and dogs. He is Chairman of the Harbour Club, Milan. Interested in opera, he is a founder donor of the Royal Opera House Trust; he is also Deputy Chairman of the Ambassador Theatre Group Ltd and the Duke of Yorks Theatre Ltd, and Director of Richmond Theatre Productions Ltd. He is also interested in eduction and has been a Governor of Harrow School since 1992.

He is married with two daughters.
