BIOGRAPHY
Sam Cocking is based at the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction in the Department of Engineering, focusing on structural monitoring and assessment of ageing railway infrastructure. Sam's research incorporates technologies such as fibre-optic sensing and acoustic emission to study both new and historic structures, with particular interest in masonry and concrete construction. This work informs the development of new decision-support tools for balancing decarbonisation and climate resilience of transport infrastructure, through the UK's National Hub for Decarbonised, Adaptable, and Resilient Transport Infrastructures (DARe). Alongside this, Sam's other current research includes the monitoring of church pinnacles and a 350-year-old tree, as part of conservation projects.
