Professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore

Sarah-Jayne is a Bye–Fellow, and is Director of Studies for Psychological and Behavioural Sciences.

Biography

Professor Blakemore is the Chair of Psychology in the Social Sciences at the University of Cambridge, where she leads the Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Group, and serves as Deputy Head of Department for Research. She is a member of High Table at Newnham and Gonville and Caius.

Teaching

Sarah-Jayne organises supervisions for our undergraduate students who are taking Psychological and Behavioural Sciences papers. She lectures in the first and third years of the Psychological and Behavioural Sciences course. She also plays a role in curriculum development and student wellbeing initiatives, and supervises final year, MPhil, and PhD students.

Research

Sarah-Jayne's research examines how the human brain and mind change during adolescence. The Blakemore Lab integrates behavioural science, neuroimaging and developmental approaches and focuses on the development of the social brain, with particular attention to social cognition, peer relationships, peer influence and sensitivity to the social environment.

Public and policy engagement

Sarah-Jayne advises on various areas of policy, including education, mental health, public health and juvenile justice. She is actively involved in public engagement, writes newspaper articles, gives public lectures and is the author of two award–winning books.

She has published more than 250 papers in scientific journals and her research has been recognised by several national and international awards. She is an Honorary Fellow of St John's College, Oxford, and a Fellow of the British Academy, the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Royal Society.
