Professor Anurag Agarwal

Anurag is our Dhruv Sawhney Official Fellow and Director of Studies in Engineering. At the University, he is Professor of Acoustics and Biomedical Technology.

Biography

Anurag studied at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, followed by a PhD specialising in acoustics and aerodynamics at the Pennsylvania State University. He moved to Cambridge's Department of Engineering in 2010 and became a Fellow at Emmanuel College. Since 2021, he has been a Professor of Acoustics and Biomedical Technology, and he is the Head of the Fluids Group and the Acoustics lab. Anurag is also a Fellow of the Cambridge Philosophical Society.

Research

Anurag's research lies at the crossroads of aerospace, computer, mechanical and bioengineering. Applications include using AI to better diagnose heart and lung diseases in humans and animals; improving efficiency and reducing noise from aeroplanes, gas turbine engines, wind turbines and domestic appliances; understanding the physics of blood-pressure measurement and everyday things like the acoustics of a dripping tap, wheezing in lungs and whistling of tea kettles.

Driven by a passion for understanding the science behind real-world observations, Anurag’s research focuses on engineering solutions to improve lives. Equally, his teaching is dedicated to inspiring and equipping the next generation of engineers to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges.
