Alex Jeffrey

Alex is an Official Fellow of Emmanuel, one of our Tutors, Director of Studies in Geography, and the Financial Tutor. At the University, he is Professor of Political and Legal Geography.

Biography 

He is a political and legal geographer with a particular interest in access to justice in the wake of violent conflict. He studied as an undergraduate at the University of Edinburgh, before going on to postgraduate study at the Durham University. His PhD explored the politics of state building processes after the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina 1992–95. Before arriving in Emmanuel in 2012, he taught in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University.

Teaching

Alex teaches introductory Human Geography lectures examining political geography and geopolitics, second year lectures exploring citizenship and civil society and a third year course on legal geography. He won the Pilkington Prize for teaching in 2018.

Research

Alex's research has focused on the governance of post-conflict environments and issues of access to justice. His latest book, The Edge of Law (Cambridge University Press, 2020), explored the relocation of war crimes trials from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to Sarajevo. His recent work has explored how the physical properties of court spaces shape perceptions of justice, in particular in the operation of international courts.
