Old Library

Back

Used as the Chapel when the College was founded, the Old Library is a historic and light space, featuring oak panels and mullioned windows. The late–Elizabethan open–timber screen at its entrance was uncovered during restoration work in the 1930s.

Although originally used for religious purposes, unlike traditional churches, the room is orientated north–south. After the completion of the Wren Chapel, this room was used as the Library between 1680–1930.

The walls are lined with paintings of historic college members, including an original full–length portrait of our founder, Sir Walter Mildmay, painted for the College in 1588. The college community use this flat–floor space for performances, events and dinners.
