Travel Grants

The Herchel Smith Scholarships Committee can award small travel grants to fund travel between Cambridge and Harvard. Grants for individual trips are usually in the region of £400, and there is an upper limit of £1,000 per individual. Each applicant may apply for the travel grant only once, though the application may cover more than one trip. Holders of Herchel Smith Scholarships are not eligible.

Applicants must be members of Emmanuel who have taken their first degree (not necessarily at Cambridge) not more than five years before the date of travel. In addition, they must be:

  • working at Harvard on Master’s degree courses, PhD courses, medical elective periods of formal study, and the like;
  • working in Cambridge, for PhDs or as post-docs, who need to attend conferences at Harvard or to spend time working with research colleagues there;
  • post-doctoral research workers, who may apply for grants for travel associated with their work during the course of their time at Harvard, and for travel between Harvard and the UK at the beginning and end of their time at Harvard.

To apply for a Travel Grant, please email the Bursar at Emmanuel College, giving details and estimated costs of the proposed travel and explaining how it relates to your academic studies. If the application is approved, receipts must be submitted before payment is made. Applications must be submitted not more than two months before the date of travel. Applications will be considered in order of receipt for as long as funds are available in any one financial year, running from 1 August to 31 July.
