Sebastian Faulks was born in 1953, and educated at Elstree School and Wellington College before coming up to Emmanuel (1971-4), where he read English. He was a reporter on the Daily and Sunday Telegraph, literary editor of the Independent and a columnist on the Independent on Sunday and the Guardian. He turned to writing books full-time in 1991. His novels include Human Traces, Charlotte Gray, Birdsong and Engleby. He is also the author of a book of literary parodies, Pistache, and a biographical study, The Fatal Englishman.
