Catherine Rae was one of about 20 women admitted to St Catherine’s College Oxford in 1974, the first year women were admitted to the ‘men’s’ Colleges. She was a scholar and senior scholar of the college and took a first in Metallurgy and the Science of Materials. A DPhil followed under the supervision of the late David A Smith. An appointment as Rolls-Royce Research Fellow at Girton College precipitated a change in both location and research area, and started a long association with Rolls-Royce and the gentle science of high temperature turbine materials. Following the birth of her second child Catherine took time out from research. Time which, owing the arrival of the third child and the recession, stretched to eight years. During those years she taught for the Open University and helped develop a Science Foundation course at the University of East Anglia to enable those without A level qualifications to gain entry to University. In 1997 Catherine returned to Cambridge in the newly established Rolls-Royce Research Centre in the Department of Materials and in October 2002 took up a lectureship and a Fellowship at Emmanuel College.

It’s 8pm and I’m about to start a 12-hour shift at the national COVID-19 testing centre in Milton Keynes. Truckloads of boxes with transparent plastic bags just arrived and a brief announcement is made: 15,000 patient swabs. For now, the mood among the team is cheerful and enthusiastic, but I know it will have morphed into exhaustion and fatigue by the end of the night.
