General Admissions LunchArrangements for General Admission 2012

Graduands from Emmanuel College will be presented in the Senate House on Friday 29 June 2012. We do not yet have an exact time, but it will probably be at about 2.30pm.

Only the following Degrees are awarded at General Admission:

How to Apply

Application to proceed at General Admission is via the Student Self-Service on CamSIS. Tickets for Senate House and the College buffet lunch, for your guests, are also applied for in this way. The absolute deadline for application is 7 May 2012. All those eligible to graduate at General Admission will be sent an email, from the Praelector's Secretary, before the end of the Lent term, giving more information on how and when to apply.

Timetable for General Admission

28 June

Graduands are invited to dine with the Fellows in Hall on Thursday 30 June. Drinks will be served in the Paddock (Old Library if wet) at 7.00 pm and dinner will be at 7.30 pm. I very much hope that as many as possible will be able to attend this dinner as it is an extremely enjoyable occasion. Dress is formal but not black tie. Gowns should also be worn.

29 June (approximate timings)

Tickets for the Senate House

We are normally able to issue each graduand with two tickets for the Senate House, for family and friends. Usually we are also able to issue a third ticket, but subject to supply. The third ticket will be issued on a first-come-first-served basis. You do not need a ticket for yourself. Children may attend, though you should be aware that it is a very formal ceremony. Those with very young children are advised to sit near to the door. Please note that there is no parking near to the Senate House.

Tickets for the Buffet Lunch

Each graduand may bring up to five guests to the Buffet Lunch in College. Guests are charged at £16.85 per person. Graduands lunch at the College's expense. Lunch tickets should be collected (from the Tutorial Office) and paid for by Friday 1 June. Cheques should be made payable to Emmanuel College.

Dress for General Admisssion

A number of officials are employed in the Senate House to enforce a strict dress code. Your Praelector is penalized for any misdemeanours of appearance, so would be glad of careful compliance with the following codes. If you are dressed incorrectly, you may not be permitted to graduate.

Men: Plain black or dark grey suit (no pinstripes); plain white shirt (no pleats; flat collar preferred); white bow tie and bands; black shoes and black socks; gown and hood as below. Jewellery must be modest.

Women: Plain black dress, or black suit (could be a trouser suit) or black skirt and plain shirt (white or black), with black or white cardigan if required, and sleeves must be long; black shoes and dark or neutral tights or stockings; gown and hood as below. Jewellery must be modest; no double drop earrings, multiple strand bangles or flashy belts are allowed.

Gown and hood

Academical dress may be purchased or hired from one of three outfitters in Cambridge. Please ensure that you have understood what gown and hood you need (as above), as the tailors have been known to offer incorrect advice. Full specifications of all gowns and hoods are given in Statutes & Ordinances, pp.190-2 (available at http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/so/pdfs/).

College Rooms

Since the programme for General Admission Day (Friday 29 June) begins at 11.30 am, it will be necessary for most people to come into residence on the preceding day, Thursday 28 June. You will be accommodated in your old room where possible. If you wish to stay up after the date of graduation you will have to apply online in the usual way, and send a cheque for £11.95 per extra night to Charlotte Humm, The Bursary, Emmanuel College.

Car parking

Car parking at the College is very limited, and only those vehicles being used to collect the belongings of graduands will be permitted to park on a first come first served basis (this does not therefore include guests, who should use the Lion Yard car park in Downing Street, http://www.cam.ac.uk/map/ or the Queen Anne car park on Gonville Place). Any enquiries regarding car parking should be addressed to the Head Porter on 01223 334274.
