Connection Requirements
Network Equipment
Wireless
- A wireless network adapter. Our wireless points offer B, G and N connections. Most recent computers have compatible wireless adapters as standard but, if not, USB dongles may be borrowed from the Computer Office (subject to availability).
Wired
- A wired network adapter. More technically, an Ethernet card with an RJ-45 socket. Many desktop PCs, most laptops and nearly all Apple computers are supplied with one by default but, if not, it is relatively simple to add one in.
- You will also need a network cable which can also be borrowed from the Computer Office. Please return it at the end of the academic year.
Operating System
- Windows 7, Vista or XP (with at least Service Pack 2) if a PC.
- Mac OS X if an Apple Macintosh.
- Unix-Based systems are also possible, please talk to us to discuss this further.
Security Software
Your computer should have the following software installed and kept up-to-date:
- Anti-Virus Software If you do not have this you will be able to get it for free once at College.
- Anti-Spyware Software Please see spyware advice for further information. This is required only for PC's.
- Personal Firewall It is recommended that you have a firewall on your computer to stop potential attacks. Please see firewall advice.
Other
- Your computer should have a strong password on it. Please see password advice for more details.
