Hermes accounts
An account is created for all new members on Hermes, a centrally-managed system providing email facilities for members of the University. You should have received your Hermes password when you completed the electronic signup process. Email addresses on it are of the form userid@hermes.cam.ac.uk but, unless you choose to set it up otherwise, you can use the address userid@cam.ac.uk. Messages arriving at this virtual address will be passed to your real account on Hermes. The @cam address is recommended for giving to friends, family and colleagues.
Sending and reading email
There are several ways to connect to Hermes. The method requiring the least setting up (so often suitable from machines not owned by you) is to use the web-based service at https://webmail.hermes.cam.ac.uk.
Any mail client should be able to be configured to work with Hermes. The University has general instructions and also specific advice for Outlook/Outlook Express, Apple Mail (OSX), Mulberry, Eudora and others.
