Achievements

Since 1993, supporters have contributed to the life and work of Emmanuel College in many ways, and we are extremely grateful to them all.

They have:

Established Access and Hardship Funds, including:

Enabled projects involving College buildings and grounds:

  • Erection of the award-winning Queen's Building, designed by Michael Hopkins and Partners, which contains a 150-seat lecture theatre with common rooms, music practice rooms and conference and seminar facilities
  • Refurbishment of houses in Park Terrace
  • Refurbishment of the sports pavilion using funds raised through the telephone fund-raising campaigns in 2000 and 2001
  • Upgrading of staircases in New Court to provide en suite facilities

Enhanced College teaching and research by establishing:

  • The Alan Wilson Research Fellowship
  • The Meggitt Fellowship in Mathematical sciences
  • The Mead Fellowship in Economics

Encouraged academic pursuits by Junior Members by establishing:

  • The E R Sands travel scholarship fund
  • The Peter Morris scholarships for postgraduate students engaged in research in history or politics
  • Adrian Martinez scholarships for graduates of Emmanuel who stay on to carry out research in music
  • The Rogers Fund, to support laboratory work by junior members
  • The India Trust, primarily to fund scholarships for Indian students
  • Panton Trust grants to enable junior members to take part in projects concerned with animals or wildlife in any part of the world, or with the environment in the United Kingdom
  • The Sansom Fund to purchase computer equipment and software for students with particular financial difficulties
  • Funding to help PhD students, with a preference towards helping someone who needs a few extra months to finish a project and whose external funding would run out too soon
  • The Sansom IT laboratory and enhanced computer facilities. Funds raised through the telephone fund-raising campaign in 2001 helped to upgrade the College's computer network
  • The Gerard Evans Fund for travel to the USA for academic purposes
  • The Freddie Odgers and David Williams Funds to support the study and teaching of Law

Endowed Prizes including:

  • The Bokhari English Prize: for a College Prize in English for the best first in the English Tripos
  • The Elisabeth and Derek Brewer Prize: for a College Prize in English, for a first in Part 1 of the English Tripos
  • The Robert Dobson memorial prize, alternating between sciences and modern languages
  • The Brewer Hall poetry prize for the best original collection of poems in English (a university-wide prize, administered by Emmanuel)

Supported extracurricular activities, for example:

  • The Simon Church Fund has been used to support the boat club, including buying a new boat for the Men's first VIII, and to equipping and furnishing the coaching room in the Boathouse
  • The Performing Arts Fund has been established
  • The Burnaby Fund has received donations to support Music

Enabled other College activities:

  • The Gomes Lecture and Dinner was endowed in 1999 through the generosity of Cynthia Wight Rossano, together with her husband Kenneth and daughter Penelope. Held annually, the occasion has been founded to mark the respect and affectionate esteem in which Peter Gomes is held in both Cambridges, and to enhance the ties of friendship which link Emmanuel and Harvard.
