Mastership

Lord Wilson retires as Master in September 2012 after a very successful ten years. The College is looking for his successor. Click here for the advertisement.


Honorary Fellows

The College is delighted to announce that it has elected to Honorary Fellowships: Gerald Davies (1968), former Wales rugby international and former Chairman of the Welsh Youth Agency, Professor John Lowden (1971), Professor of the History of Art at the Courtauld Institute, and Professor Sir Peter Rubin (1968), Professor of Therapeutics at the University of Nottingham and Chairman of the General Medical Council.


Carolin Crawford appointed as Gresham Professor of Astronomy

Emmanuel Fellow, Dr Carolin Crawford, has been appointed as the Gresham College Professor of Astronomy. She will follow in the footsteps of Sir Christopher Wren by giving a series of public lectures in the City of London wherein she plans 'to showcase the very latest developments and ideas in astronomy and cosmology, whilst putting them into the context of the process of scientific discovery'.


New Professors & Reader

Three Fellows have been promoted recently: Steven Boldy has been appointed to a Professorship in Spanish and Jon Lawrence has been appointed to a Readership in History, both from October 2011, and Liesbeth van Houts has been conferred with the title of 'Honorary Professor in Medieval European History'.


College Chefs Triumph at TUCO Awards 2011

Sous chefs Tom Jeffery and Nathan Aldous and Section Chef Oliver Prince won the Silver award for Emmanuel College in the TUCO (The University Caterers Organisation) Awards, held in Blackpool. They were one of 18 teams from universities around the UK and came second overall. The catering team are delighted to add this latest award to the growing list of achievements including the 2010 Stewards Cup in the University of Cambridge Chef's competition.

ECN Events

Alumni weekend

The Master and Dr Bendall invite Members who are attending the University's Alumni Weekend to exercise their dining rights and join them for dinner at High Table on Thursday 22 September. Members may bring a guest (for whom there is a charge). A booking form is available here.


Gathering of Members

The next Gathering will be held on 24 September 2011 and will be for those who matriculated in 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975. Invitations were sent out in June. For more information contact gatheringofmembers@emma.cam.ac.uk.


Election for the Office of Chancellor

An election for the Office of Chancellor will be held in Cambridge on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 October. The electorate are members of the Senate: ie anyone who holds any Cambridge Master's or Doctor's degree, or the degree of the Bachelor of Divinity. Further details of the voting procedure have not yet been announced, but so long as the arrangements are compatible the Master plans to hold a cold buffet lunch in the Master's Lodge between 12.30pm and 2pm on each day for any Member of Emmanuel who comes to vote and who books by Friday 7 October with the Development Office.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IF ANY CANDIDATE WITHDRAWS UP TO 7 DAYS BEFORE THE ELECTION, THEN THE VOTE MAY NEED TO BE POSTPONED SO PLEASE CHECK ON www.cam.ac.uk AFTER 7 OCTOBER OR CONTACT THE DEVELOPMENT OFFICE.

There are three candidates in addition to the Nomination Board's candidate, Lord Sainsbury of Turville, an alumnus of King's College:

  • Mr Abdul Arain
  • Mr Brian Blessed
  • Mr Michael Mansfield

The current Chancellor, HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, stood down from the role on 30 June after 34 years in the post.


Burnaby Recitals

Burnaby Recitals will be held as follows in 2011-12:

  • Friday 25 November 2011: Michael McHale (2001, piano) and Anna Wolstenholme (1999, flute)
  • Friday 2 February 2012: David Ponsford (1968, organ)
  • Friday 4 May 2012: Piano trios performed by Maurice Hodges (piano), Steve Bingham (violin) and Nicola Anderson (cello)

Each recital starts at 6.30pm and lasts for 45 minutes. All are welcome and admission is free. Members and guests are welcome to dine at High Table afterwards. To book for dinner, please download a High Table booking form here. The programme for each concert will be available here beforehand.


Intellectual Property Lecture

The Seventh Annual International Property Lecture will be given by Professor Bernt Hugenholtz of the University of Amsterdam. Professor Hugenholtz is a leading figure in international copyright and his lecture will take place in the Queen's Building on Tuesday 13 March 2012 at 6pm. If you are interested in attending please contact the Development Office. Members and guests are welcome to dine at High Table afterwards. Emmanuel Society Newsletter

The Emmanuel Society's latest newsletter is available here. Highlights in the next few months include a lecture by Professor Alexandra Walsham, on Scripture and Society in Seventeenth-Century England: the Making of the King James Bible on Friday 16 September, a visit to Warwick and Kenilworth Castle with Julian Humphrys (1977) on Saturday 17 September, city drinks on Tuesday 20 September, a wine tasting event organised by Oliver Johnson (1973) of the Wine Society (in London) on Wednesday 28 September, an evening visit to Great Ormond Street Hospital on Wednesday 12 October, a visit to the racehorse stables of National Hunt trainer Graeme McPherson (1989) on Saturday 15 October, a talk by Julian Philips (1987) about his youth opera Knight Crew on Friday 18 November, and the Society's AGM followed by a sing and a play-through of Handel's Messiah on Saturday 26 November.
